Honoring Local Art Legend John Bayides

The Willis Park Hotel proudly displays a captivating collection of local artist John Bayides' paintings. With 14 of his pieces exhibited in our hallways and rooms, guests are immersed in Bayides' artistic perspective of quintessential southern scenes.

Born in Boston but a long-time resident of Georgia, John Bayides was a prolific impressionist painter known for beautifully capturing the nostalgic ambiance of the American South. His oil paintings showcase historic homes, hotels, courthouses, and pastoral landscapes across the region. With a career spanning over 70 years, until he died in 2017 at age 94, Bayides completed over 2,000 paintings that provide a window into southern history and culture.

In 2023, the Firehouse Art Gallery in Bainbridge, Georgia, hosted a "Light of Life" exhibition showcasing over 60 of John Bayides' oil paintings to honor his life and prolific career.

Here at The Willis Park Hotel, we are honored to showcase Bayides' work throughout our historic property. His masterful impressionist style brings to life the romantic allure of our area's architecture, countryside, and enduring traditions. As our guests relax in their rooms or stroll our hallways, they can experience scenes evoking the beauty of our beloved south through Bayides' artistic lens.

“I could probably make a living selling [art] in a big city, but I'm not in it for the money. I do it for pleasure.”

— John Bayides

John Bayides' impressionist southern scenes have resonated in Georgia and overseas. In the early 2000s, he began a series of paintings depicting musicians - including a banjo player, violinist, and a man playing jug. These caught the eye of an art seller in Japan who purchased five of these works. According to Bayides, the seller made smaller reproductions labeled "limited editions" in English and Japanese to sell in galleries in Yokohama and Tokyo.

Bayides was delighted to gain fame in Japan, musing that "someone from a little town like this is selling something in Japan." Though his work gained international appeal, as evidenced by sales in Japan, Bayides remained grounded in his local community. He noted, "I could probably make a living selling [art] in a big city, but I'm not in it for the money. I do it for pleasure."

In the hall, we've recreated Bayides' art studio as a tribute to his lasting legacy. The display features his actual easel, paintbrushes, and other supplies he used to create these stunning works. It provides visitors a glimpse into his creative process.

We hope our exhibition allows more people to admire John Bayides' magnificent impressionist paintings of southern life. Experience scenes from his talented hand and brush yourself at The Willis Park Hotel.
